Case study
The Challenge
We built custom machine learning software for an eleven-location bakery chain with
9-figure revenue. Before the software, the business ran on Excel sheets, with
managers manually entering wastage and next-week forecasts, resulting in
significant human error and little opportunity to plan further out.
The Solution
• The business now receives 14-day forecasts each day for every product at each site. The model considers over 100 different factors, including rain, wind, past sales and various momentum factors. Using the same patterns, the system also produces 46-day and 7-month forecasts regularly to support staff and procurement planning.
• The daily forecasts are provided to staff in the same Excel format as before the model system, avoiding retraining and enabling a quick transition from the legacy system.
• To keep the system usable and trustworthy day-to-day, we built a bespoke application that sits on top of the forecasting engine. It allows the business to adjust the model's forecasts where commercial judgement dictates, see clearly how the model operates and arrives at its outputs, and understand the relationships driving each forecast.
The Result
The business has moved from a manual forecasting system prone to human error to an automated system that runs daily, extracts millions of data points from the POS, and produces site-aware forecasts built on daily sales patterns.
